Chair Title: Biotechnological Applications of the Deep Bioshphere Metagenome
Hosted by: Faculty of Science
For more information please contact: Ken Barker
The subsurface biosphere is largely unexplored but contains a very large fraction of the microbial biosphere of the Earth, with large biotechnological potential. The successful candidate for the Professorship in Biotechnological Applications of the Deep Biosphere Metagenome will work with the University of Calgary’s successful research team of microbial ecologists, petroleum geoscientists, petroleum engineers and deep biosphere and medical microbiologists to investigate the biotechnological uses of subterranean microorganisms alongside the existing initiatives in energy recovery and emission reduction. As a compliment to the Chair in Reservoir Biogeoscience, this research program potentially also involves biomedical and life science outcomes including the development and application of biosensors, antibiotics and other therapeutic agents. This Professorship will broaden the profile of the established deep biosphere research program at the University of Calgary with the candidate becoming part of a wider, integrated interdisciplinary team across several faculties.
The recruit will be a highly qualified scientist in a discipline related to the emerging field of deep biosphere metagenome studies. The successful candidate will have a background in biotechnology, genomics, or be from the non-medical or medical microbiology community, and will have either a PhD or a PhD/MD. With a strong research and publication track record, he or she will formulate a cohesive and integrated research plan based on subsurface microorganisms, their properties and technological capabilities.
The appointment will be at either the Associate or Assistant Professor level.
