CAIP: Energy and the Environment
Chair Title: Reservoir Biogeoscience
Hosted by: Faculty of Science
For more information please contact: Ken Barker
As the world turns its attention to solving the need for low carbon emission, affordable energy, the University of Calgary is leading the way in energy technology development research with the appointment of a research Chair in Reservoir Biogeoscience. The successful candidate will have a passion for the study of how microorganisms live and interact with their complex chemical and physical environments in subsurface reservoirs and how such studies can mitigate large scale problems associated with energy supply and carbon management. The Reservoir Biogeoscience Chair will have a proven record of excellence in research and technology development in a relevant science and engineering area and he or she will join a successful team of microbiologists and microbial ecologists, petroleum geoscientists and petroleum engineering researchers committed to achieving transformative results in the study and application of the petroleum reservoir biosphere to the solution of large scale problems in the unconventional energy, carbon management areas and related areas.
The Chair in Reservoir Biogeoscience requires a background in one or more of molecular biology, microbial ecology, petroleum microbiology, biotechnology, geochemistry, reservoir geoscience, or reservoir engineering. The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of the key issues related to reservoir biogeoscience and engineering while being a top-grade domain specialist in at least one area. Ideally, the recruit will be a technologist as well as a researcher, with a track record of successful commercialisation, management, leadership, and industry engagement. The Chair will help facilitate the large scale investment needed to develop the already world-leading team at the University of Calgary to become a hub of next-generation energy technology development.
The appointment will be at either the Full or Associate Professor level.
